        6. MATCH SUMMARY

          There was huge disappointment after the full-time whistle in Yerevan as the 1-1 draw with Armenia takes qualification for EURO 2024 out of Cymru’s hands giving advantage back to Croatia.

          Cymru got off to a terrible start as they succumbed to early Armenia pressure and when the defence failed to close Lucas Zelarayán down from a cleared corner kick, he was given space to fire low into the net to give his team the lead.

          Rob Page’s team did manage to settle after this setback but were struggling to generate any clear cut chances. David Brooks, Neco Williams, Kieffer Moore and Wilson all had efforts but nothing really troubled Ognjen Chancharevich too much in the Armenia goals.

          Nevertheless, Cymru were deserving of their equaliser before the half-time interval. A long throw from Connor Roberts towards the near post saw Joe Rodon challenge Nair Tiknizyan for the ball. Under Rodon’s pressure, Tiknizyan headed the ball into his own net.

          It seemed to be the perfect time to score with Cymru expected to apply the pressure in the second half. However, with both teams making substitutions and changing their formations to go more attacking, the game opened up but it was Armenia who had the best chances to win the game.

          One of those chances saw Vahan Bichakhchyan strike the underside of the crossbar from the edge of the box. Luckily for Cymru, the ball bounced back the right side of the goal line and the defence were able to clear.

          In added time Danny Ward was forced into producing a fine save to deny Edgar Sevikyan after a Cymru attack broke down. The same player could have won it with nearly the last kick of the match as the ball broke for him in the box but he scuffed his effort wide.

          The result means that automatic qualification for EURO 2024, whilst not an impossibility, is now unlikely for Cymru should Croatia beat Latvia in their match on Saturday evening (5pm).

          If Croatia were to lose or draw with Latvia, a win for Cymru against Türkiye on Tuesday (21 November) would see them take second spot. Rob Page will be without Chris Mepham for that match following his booking against Armenia.

          The result neither team wanted. EURO 2024 qualification is now out of Cymru’s hands with advantage swinging back to Croatia, who play Latvia at 17:00.

          Cymru left it late to equalise in the first half after Armenia had taken an early lead through Zelarayán. From a long Roberts throw in added time Rodon appeared to get the touch to equalise at the perfect time.

          Rob Page will be disappointed in the way Cymru started the match by allowing themselves to succumb to Armenia’s early pressure. When the defence failed to close Zelarayán down from a cleared corner kick, he was given space shoot Armenia into the lead.

          Cymru settled and created chances for themselves and deserved their equaliser when it came.

          Cymru will qualify if they can beat Armenia in Yerevan and Croatia lose to Latvia.
          Croatia will not be able to qualify through the group if they lose to Latvia and Cymru win.
          Armenia will not be able to finish in the top two if they lose to Cymru. They will suffer the same fate if they draw and Croatia win.
          Latvia are unable to qualify but can play a part in who reaches UEFA EURO 2024.

          If Croatia were to win in Latvia on Saturday and beat Armenia at home on Tuesday, they would be unable to finish above Cymru if they win their matches against Armenia and Türkiye due to an inferior head-to-head record.

        81. Benoît Bastien will take charge of the EURO 2024 qualifier between Armenia and Cymru in Yerevan on Saturday.

          The 40-year old French official has been a FIFA referee since 2014 and was the man in the middle for the 1-1 draw between Cymru and Belgium in the UEFA Nations League last year (below). Bastien was also the referee for the international friendly between Cymru and the Netherlands in Cardiff back in November 2015.

          Hicham Zakrani and Aurélien Berthomieu are the assistant referees and Jérémie Pignard will be the fourth official. Benoît Millot is the VAR and he will be assisted by Bastien Dechepy. All of the officials are from France.

        86. Harry Wilson was the hero for Cymru last month when he scored both goals in the 2-1 win over Croatia on what was his 50th international appearance. Manager Rob Page spoke to the media earlier this week and praised the Fulham striker.

          “He has stepped up to the plate,” said Page. “I’m so pleased for him because he’s not just a good player, he’s an absolute diamond of a kid. I said to the young lads up in Wrexham for the Gibraltar game: ‘Just watch him warm up’. Everything he does is to the nth degree.

          “He’s the nicest fella you will ever meet off the pitch, but when he crosses that line he’s a model example of what you would want a modern footballer to look like. You can see why he has had the career he has and why he is playing in the Premier League, and why he is now getting the plaudits that he has got for us.

          “Go back about 12 months ago, he would turn up and expect to be part of the squad, or if he started he would be substituted on the hour mark. But the mentality has changed now. He’s playing in the Premier League, scoring goals and creating chances.

          “When he plays for us now he’s one of the main men and showed that in the last game. I don’t expect him to come in and just accept playing for 55, 60 minutes. I want him to have that mentality that he is one of our top players now and he is going to go and win games for us.”

        88. The emergence of teenage midfielder Jordan James has been a huge positive from the current qualifying campaign,

          James (below) put in an impressive performance in the 2-1 win over Croatia last month and reflected on the occasion when he spoke to the media this week. “I don’t think it gets much better than that, but we’ve still got a job to do. On paper, that was the toughest game in the group, but we’re not going to take the next two games lightly.

          “It was probably the best night of my life. Seeing my family in the crowd and how proud they were, it was a massive win for the country. Hopefully we can do the same in the next two games.

          “We know what it means to the country to get to these big tournaments, so that’s our focus and hopefully we can do that.”

        91. Armenia claimed a shock 4-2 win against Cymru in Cardiff back in June (below) in what was only the third meeting between the two nations. Dan James and Harry Wilson were on target for the home side while striker Kieffer Moore was sent off.

          The previous two fixtures ended in draws and came during the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. The first match took place in Yerevan in March 2001 when a brace from John Hartson for Mark Hughes’ side could only earn a point as the match finished 2-2.

          The return match in Cardiff finished in 0-0 in a qualifying campaign that saw Cymru claim just one victory in ten games and only Armenia would finish below them in the group.

        93. The Cymru squad trained against the elements on Monday as manager Rob Page and his players set their attentions firmly on Saturday’s match against Armenia.

          Niall Huggins and Jay DaSilva are two new faces in the squad for the Group D double-header which will decide if Cymru qualify for EURO 2024 automatically or not. Meanwhile, Ben Davies will again captain the side in the absence of the injured Aaron Ramsey.

          “We’ve got a good group here,” said Davies (below) on Monday. “We know what’s expected of us and we’re not looking too far ahead. We can’t take our eyes off the fact that each game is important in itself. If we don’t get a result in Armenia, the Turkey one is kind of irrelevant so it’s important our sole focus is on Armenia.”

        95. Cymru head into their final two Group D qualifiers this week in the knowledge that automatic qualification for EURO 2024 is in their own hands.

          Rob Page’s need six points to guarantee their place in Germany next summer as they prepare to take on Armenia in Yerevan on Saturday before hosting Türkiye in Cardiff on Tuesday night.

          Armenia and Croatia also remain in contention for automatic qualification, but Cymru have the head-to-head advantage over Croatia as all three teams head into their final two games of the campaign.

          Meanwhile, Türkiye have already booked their place at EURO 2024 with just one game remaining. Here is the latest Group D table heading into this final week of qualifiers.
