Cymru vs. England | 2022 FIFA World Cup – Final Tournament Group Stage – Group B

Live

      Live ReportMatch Summary

      1. 30 November, 2022 8:19 am

A similar theme across the front and back pages this morning as the nation comes to terms with the fact that the World Cup dream is over after just three group games. Cymru ended 64-years of hurt to qualify for the finals, but ultimately fell short when it came to producing on the biggest stage of all.

      2. “Everyone’s disappointed but we’re all proud of what we achieved to get here and to qualify. We have to look at how far we’ve come. Of course we would have loved to have gone past the group, but football is difficult. We will take massive experience from it. We’ve worked really hard to get here, and we’ll walk out of that changing room with our heads held high and proud of each other. We’re frustrated, we would have loved to have played better and created more chances, but it just didn’t happen for us in this tournament.” – Cymru captain Gareth Bale to BBC Sport Wales

      3. “It’s very tough at this moment in time. I thought in the first half we were outstanding, I really did. The effort they put in without the ball was exceptional. We addressed it at half-time that we could have been a bit better with the ball, but I won’t have a bad word said about that group of players. They’ve given everything and I don’t want to talk about negatives today. We’re disappointed to leave the tournament, but our first half performance was excellent. It was a massive effort from the group and I couldn’t be more proud of them. To get here was a massive achievement. We’ve got to build for the future again now.” – Manager Rob Page to BBC Sport Wales.

      4. Full-time verdict: The dream is over. The miracle never arrived. England win the group with a convincing 3-0 victory as Cymru fail to deliver in the second half. A solid defensive display frustrated England in the first 45 minutes, but it was Southgate and his side that offered an effective response. A disappointing end to a disappointing tournament for Cymru.

      5. A picture is worth a thousand words.

      6. Colwill replaces Allen for the final 10 minutes. The 20-year old is certainly one for the future and this little taste of playing on the world stage will benefit him and Cymru, even though tonight is a painful one to be involved in.

      7. Substitution

        COLWILL Rubin replaces ALLEN Joseph

      8. Substitution

        WILSON Harry replaces JAMES Daniel

      9. Substitution

        GREALISH Jack replaces RASHFORD Marcus

      10. Joe Morrell makes his World Cup debut from the bench.

      11. Rashford gets his second for England to make it 3-0. It’s all over with 20 minutes remaining.

      12. Goal

        RASHFORD Marcus

      13. Any injury for Davies brings his World Cup experience to an early end as he is replaced by Morrell. Damage limitation for Cymru now as England look to hold the lead that will take them through as group winners.

      14. Substitution

        TRIPPIER Kieran replaces SHAW Luke

      15. Yellow card

        RAMSEY Aaron

      16. Chris Mepham on the ball with the Red Wall behind him.

      17. Substitution

        MORRELL Joseff replaces DAVIES Benjamin

      18. A positive response from Cymru with James and Moore both going close. With nothing left to defend Page’s side now must show some attacking character if this is to be their final match of the tournament. A string of changes for England who will all want to impress ahead of the next round.

      19. Substitution

        WILSON Callum replaces KANE Harry

      20. Substitution

        PHILLIPS Kalvin replaces RICE Declan

      21. Substitution

        ALEXANDER-ARNOLD Trent replaces WALKER Kyle

      22. Foden makes it two with Cymru still rattled by the opening goal. An awful start after half-time. Page needs to make sure his players regroup before this becomes any worse.

      23. Goal

        FODEN Phil

      24. Rashford puts England ahead with a superb free-kick. A fine finish but Cymru have given their opponents too many set-piece opportunities from that distance.

      25. Goal

        RASHFORD Marcus

      26. Cymru manager Rob Page was animated on the touchline during the opening half.

      27. Johnson replaces Bale at half-time. A big call from Page to change the attacking dynamic and his pace will cause problems for England if he can get on the ball enough.

      28. Gareth Bale is left frustrated as England enjoy long periods of possession in the opening half. It remains goalless but Cymru need a win to have any chance and must offer more in the attacking third.

      29. Half-time verdict: No goals and few chances but it’s England that have enjoyed all the possession and look the most likely to score. A fine save from Ward to deny Rashford early on settled any nerves but Cymru have offered little in the final third. A late chance for Allen from long distance was one of the few moments of positive play from Page’s side, but when they have pushed forward, they have looked vulnerable on the counter-attack.

      30. Substitution

        JOHNSON Brennan replaces BALE Gareth

      31. The United States lead Iran 1-0. That’s not good for Cymru.

      32. The Red Wall

      33. Substitution

        ROBERTS Connor replaces WILLIAMS Neco

      34. An enforced change for Cymru as Roberts replaces Williams following an earlier blow to the head. A natural replacement in the right-back position but frustration for the talented 21-year old on his 26th senior appearance.

      35. It’s still 0-0 between Iran and the United States. If it stays that way, any victory for Cymru would be enough to progress from the group.

      36. Yellow card

        JAMES Daniel

      37. Aaron Ramsey will want to get on the ball more as England enjoy long periods of possession.

      38. Mepham having to be at his best in the centre of the Cymru defence. England are putting the pressure on and this break in play as Williams receives treatment will be welcome for Page and his side now.

      39. Concern as Cymru concede a couple of free-kicks on the edge of the area. Page will not want this to become a habit from his team tonight.

      40. Yma o Hyd

      41. A great save from Ward to deny Rashford. An early scare for the Cymru defence as Kane finds a way through but a confidence-boosting block from the goalkeeper.

      42. England enjoying all the possession in the opening exchanges but Cymru have adopted a solid defensive shape for this match and they will need to be disciplined against the quality that England have in attack.

      43. We’re underway at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium as Aaron Ramsey kicks-off after both teams take the knee. Cymru must win to have any chance of progressing. C’mon Cymru.

      44. 29 November, 2022 6:44 pm

Final preparations on the field ahead of kick-off which is getting very close. The national anthems are next and the Red Wall are ready.

      45. 29 November, 2022 6:22 pm

The time for talking is over. Cymru captain Gareth Bale cuts a serious figure as he takes a walk around the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.

      46. 29 November, 2022 6:13 pm

Although he only turned 22 in September, Ethan Ampadu makes his 40th senior international appearance for Cymru tonight. His debut came back in November 2017 in a friendly against France.

      47. 29 November, 2022 6:00 pm

Brilliant to see David Brooks in attendance at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium tonight. Inspirational.

      48. 29 November, 2022 5:58 pm

An expected change in formation from Cymru tonight following the disappointing defeat to Iran on Friday with a switch to a back four. Joe Allen makes his first start of the tournament which will allow Aaron Ramsey to play further forward in another significant tactical change to previous games.

      49. 29 November, 2022 5:50 pm

The Cymru starting line-up has been announced. Here are the XI that will look to beat England tonight and hopefully stay in the World Cup. C’mon Cymru!

      50. 29 November, 2022 5:27 pm

This will be Cymru’s third match at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Group B. The scene is set for what is expected to be an intense match as England are not yet guaranteed a place in the knockout stages, while Cymru know that only a win will give them any chance of progressing.

      51. 29 November, 2022 5:19 pm

Here’s a sneak peak inside the Cymru changing room ahead of the team arrival, which will be very soon. Team news to follow shortly from both teams.

      52. 29 November, 2022 5:10 pm

The Red Wall are starting to arrive at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium. The atmosphere is starting to build. This is what it has all come down to for Cymru. Only a win will do.

      53. 29 November, 2022 2:29 pm

Defender Joe Rodon has spoken about potentially coming up against Harry Kane this evening. “Harry has been a top player for many years,” said Rodon. “He is a brilliant finisher, both feet as well. He has scored many goals and is a world-class striker. I have trained and spent a couple of seasons with him and we all know how good he is. In a competitive game it is going to be another brilliant challenge and one I am very excited about.”

      54. 29 November, 2022 2:11 pm

The Cymru squad took a short walk earlier today as part of their final preparations before taking on England in the decisive Group B match this evening. Manager Rob Page will have now decided on his starting line-up for what is a must-win match for his side.

      55. 29 November, 2022 12:00 pm

The message across the front and back pages in Wales this morning is clear as Cymru captain Gareth Bale looks to lead his team to a famous victory that could lead to the knockout stages of the World Cup. Rob Page’s side must beat England, and assuming the result is by less than four goals, then rely on Iran and the United States to draw in their final Group B game.

      56. 29 November, 2022 8:57 am

Plenty of debate across the media this morning over the possible team selections of both Gareth Southgate and Rob Page as Cymru and England prepare to meet at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium. Phil Foden and Kyle Walker are two players expected to feature for England while Joe Allen could come into the starting line-up for Cymru having come off the bench against Iran for his first appearance since September.

      57. 29 November, 2022 8:34 am

There will be a few new faces and voices in the Red Wall this evening after Dan James presented the ground staff at the Cymru training centre with match tickets for the decisive Group B match against England. Cymru must win to have any chance of progressing through to the knockout stages.

      58. 28 November, 2022 5:39 pm

The Cymru squad continued their preparations today ahead the third and final Group B match against England. Rob Page’s side must win to have any chance of progressing through to the knockout stages of the competition. Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey will miss the match through suspension while Page suggested in his press conference earlier today that further changes could be made to his starting line-up following the 2-0 defeat to Iran.

      59. 28 November, 2022 5:31 pm

Cymru captain Gareth Bale also spoke to the media this afternoon. “We’re disappointed in the results and the performances. But that’s football, it’s not easy, it’s a World Cup. we’ll always give 100%. We’ve been working hard the last few days to correct things. We just need to keep working hard and hopefully things will turn around for us. At this current moment we’re not in the greatest of positions but this is football, it’s not easy. The main thing for us all is that we’ve stuck together as a group like we always have done. You saw our reaction when we conceded against Iran, we were all lying on the floor heartbroken. No one can ever question our commitment. We’ll stick together through thick and thin.”

      60. 28 November, 2022 5:24 pm

More from Rob Page – “We’ve got a squad of players we can pick from. I’ll pick a team I think can go out and get us the win. Without giving my team away we’ll no doubt be needing to use more than the starting 11. I think this tournament has shown every team is beatable. They’ve got a wonderful pool of players to choose from, I might add. Whatever team he puts on that pitch is going to be a tough challenge for us. We’re not just here to give disappointing performances, we want to give a good account of ourselves.”

      61. 28 November, 2022 5:21 pm

Cymru manager Rob Page spoke to the media earlier today ahead of the crucial Group B match against England. “We’ve worked so hard to get into this position,” said Page. “My frustration for the players is we’ve shown nowhere near the levels of performance we showed to get to this World Cup. We’ve got to draw a line under it, the last performance. Irrespective of the other result, we have to give the supporters a performance to be proud of. We want to react in a positive manner and I’ll pick a team that’ll go out and give everything to the cause.”

      62. 28 November, 2022 10:35 am

The build-up to Cymru taking on England on Tuesday dominates the back pages this morning with debate over the respective team selections for this third and final Group B match.

      63. 28 November, 2022 10:26 am

Cymru have defeated England 14 times since the two nations first met back in January 1879, but a victory on Tuesday could prove to be the most important yet if it can earn Rob Page and his squad a place in the knockout stages of the World Cup. John Vaughan was the first Cymru hero in this fixture as his decisive goal earned his side the first win in March 1880 in a 1-0 victory at Blackburn, while Mark Hughes scored the only goal of the game on his debut for Cymru at Wrexham in May 1984. That was the last win for Cymru in this fixture, and one they will be desperate to repeat tomorrow.

      64. 28 November, 2022 10:08 am

Experienced Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić will take charge of the Group B match between Cymru and England on Tuesday. The 43-year old is a veteran of almost 400 professional games during his career and was in the middle as Saudi Arabia caused one of the shocks of the tournament with their 2-1 win against Argentina in the opening round of games.

      65. 27 November, 2022 5:57 pm

Ben Davies spoke to the media earlier today ahead of the match against England on Tuesday. “I don’t think it’s a question of trying to find that belief,” explained the Cymru defender who made his 76th appearance in the 2-0 defeat to Iran. “Everybody knows that we’ve got quality in there and we really do believe that we can win the game. We know it will be hard, and we know we’ll have to be at our best to do it, but we have to give everything we’ve got.”

      66. 27 November, 2022 5:49 pm

Cymru will need the Red Wall behind them like never before on Tuesday for the must-win match against England at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium. The support for Rob Page’s side in Qatar has again been incredible.

      67. 27 November, 2022 5:38 pm

The Cymru squad were back on the training ground today as preparations continued ahead of the decisive Group B match against England. Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey will miss the match through suspension following his red card in the 2-0 defeat to Iran.

      68. 27 November, 2022 5:32 pm

Cymru captain Gareth Bale was making headlines this morning ahead of the crucial Group B match against England on Tuesday. Only a victory will be enough for Rob Page’s side and even then qualification for the knockout stages would likely depend on a draw between Iran and the United States.
