          Cymru went into this match looking to make amends for the surprise 4-2 defeat to Armenia in Cardiff on Friday, but Rob Page’s side left the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium on Monday night having suffered another defeat as Türkiye claimed a 2-0 victory.

          It could have been more for the home side as an own goal from Chris Mepham and a 2nd half goal from substitute Umut Nayir were ruled out following VAR reviews for offside and handball respectively.

          Harry Wilson had Cymru’s best effort but his well-struck free-kick was saved by Mert Günok, while at the other end goalkeeper Danny Ward denied captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu from the penalty spot, but despite the setbacks, Türkiye were not deterred.

          For the second match in succession, Cymru were reduced to 10-men as midfielder Joe Morrell was shown a straight red card just before half-time for a high tackle, while Brennan Johnson required treatment during the opening half and was replaced during the interval.

          Moments after his goal was disallowed, Nayir finally opened the scoring for Türkiye on 72 minutes as he rose above Joe Rodon and Chris Mepham to head the ball past Ward, and teenager Arda Güler then doubled the advantage on 80 minutes with a superb individual strike that curled into the far corner of the net.

          Cymru now have four games left in Group D to salvage their EURO 2024 qualifying campaign, and Page will need to lift his side after suffering two frustrating defeats on the back of an impressive point in Croatia and a victory over Latvia if his side are to reach a third consecutive EURO finals.

        63. Cymru manager Rob Page spoke to the media in Samsun on Sunday as his squad prepare to take on Group D leaders Türkiye following the surprise defeat against Armenia.

          “Friday was a massive bump, but now we stick together as a group,” said Page. “We showed our potential in March. We are still a young group so there are going to be inconsistencies, there are going to be bumps. But we’re a team in progression, a team in transition, so we have to remind ourselves where on the journey we are.

          “It’s a long-term plan. Since the World Cup there have been some senior players who have left, big characters in the changing room. We are going to have moments like we had the other night, it’s about how we manage those defeats. Get both sides of our game right and we will be a force to be reckoned with, and we will be able to compete with top nations.”

        68. Türkiye captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu will be one of the key players that Cymru will need to watch out for on Monday evening. The talented attacking midfielder made headlines in the summer of 2021 when he moved AC Milan to Inter Milan and has represented his country at every level from U16’s to the national team after making his senior debut in 2013. The 29-year old Çalhanoğlu has scored 17 goals in 77 appearances for his country during the last decade.

        72. Italian Fabio Maresca will take charge of the EURO 2024 qualifier between Türkiye and Cymru in Samsun on Monday. The 42-year old compliments his domestic games in Serie A by also officiating in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa Conference League together with international appointments following his promotion to the FIFA list in 2020.

          In January this year, Maresca took charge of the Italian Super Cup between AC Milan and Inter in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He will be assisted on Monday by Daniele Bindoni and Alberto Tegoni while Luca Massimi is the fourth official. Massimiliano Irrati is the VAR and he will be assisted by Gianluca Aureliano. All of the officials are from Italy.

        74. Former Germany striker Stefan Kuntz is the current manager of Türkiye. The 60-year old took charge of the national team in September 2021 following the last EURO finals and this is his highest-profile appointment having previously coached the Germany U21 team between 2016 and 2021 after spells in the lower levels of the German game. He was an impressive record, winning 11 of his 17 international fixtures to date, but his side did suffer a 2-0 defeat to Croatia earlier in the campaign.

The Cymru squad travelled to Türkiye on Saturday ahead of what is now a crucial EURO 2024 qualifier against the hosts in Samsun on Monday evening following the surprise 4-2 defeat to Armenia in Cardiff. A repeat result on Monday would prove just as valuable for Page and his squad as they look to get the qualification campaign back on track following the defeat to Armenia on Friday night.

          Cymru striker Kieffer Moore was shown a straight red card in the defeat to Armenia, but there was a welcome return to action for David Brooks, and he will be one of a number of players in contention for a place in the starting line-up on Monday as Page looks to make amends for what was one of the lowest points for the side in recent years.
