      Live ReportMatch Summary

      1. Türkiye 2-0 Cymru

        • Substitutes score decisive goals for Türkiye
        • Joe Morrell sent off before half-time
        • Danny Ward saves a penalty
        • Türkiye also have two goals denied by VAR

Cymru went into this match looking to make amends for the surprise 4-2 defeat to Armenia in Cardiff on Friday, but Rob Page’s side left the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium on Monday night having suffered another defeat as Türkiye claimed a 2-0 victory.

It could have been more for the home side as an own goal from Chris Mepham and a 2nd half goal from substitute Umut Nayir were ruled out following VAR reviews for offside and handball respectively.

Harry Wilson had Cymru’s best effort but his well-struck free-kick was saved by Mert Günok, while at the other end goalkeeper Danny Ward denied captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu from the penalty spot, but despite the setbacks, Türkiye were not deterred.

For the second match in succession, Cymru were reduced to 10-men as midfielder Joe Morrell was shown a straight red card just before half-time for a high tackle, while Brennan Johnson required treatment during the opening half and was replaced during the interval.

Moments after his goal was disallowed, Nayir finally opened the scoring for Türkiye on 72 minutes as he rose above Joe Rodon and Chris Mepham to head the ball past Ward, and teenager Arda Güler then doubled the advantage on 80 minutes with a superb individual strike that curled into the far corner of the net.

Cymru now have four games left in Group D to salvage their EURO 2024 qualifying campaign, and Page will need to lift his side after suffering two frustrating defeats on the back of an impressive point in Croatia and a victory over Latvia if his side are to reach a third consecutive EURO finals.

      2. Substitution

        SALIH UÇAN replaces ORKUN KÖKÇÜ

      3. Substitution

JAMES Jordan Anthony replaces RAMSEY Aaron

      4. Substitution

BROADHEAD Nathan Paul replaces WILSON Harry

      5. Goal

        ARDA GÜLER

      6. Güler scores a superb individual second goal for Türkiye as the 18-year old substitute curls the ball past Ward from outside the area. That should seal the points for the home side and with it extend their advantage at the top of Group D.

      7. Yellow card

        İRFAN CAN KAHVECI

      8. Cymru defender Connor Roberts cuts a frustrated figure as Türkiye take the lead.

      9. Substitution

İRFAN CAN KAHVECI replaces FERDI KADIOĞLU

      10. Goal

        UMUT NAYIR

      11. Türkiye eventually take the lead as substitute Nayir rises above Rodon and Mepham to head the ball past Ward. No doubt that Cymru have had multiple warnings.

      12. Another escape for Cymru as VAR rules out another goal for Türkiye, this time for handball. The home fans are becoming increasingly frustrated which will be music to Cymru ears.

      13. Missed penalty

        HAKAN ÇALHANOĞLU

      14. A huge relief for Cymru as Ward saves a penalty from Türkiye captain Çalhanoğlu after Ramsey was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. That could be the key moment of the match.

      15. Substitution

BRADSHAW Thomas William replaces JAMES Daniel Owen

      16. A change in approach from Page as Bradshaw replaces James to offer a different dimension in attack.

      17. Substitution

        EREN ELMALI replaces ZEKI ÇELIK

      18. Substitution

        ARDA GÜLER replaces SALIH ÖZCAN

      19. Yellow card

        ROBERTS Connor Richard John

      20. Cymru captain Aaron Ramsey holds of the challenge of Zeki Çelik.

      21. Türkiye are starting to control matters once again and are making their numerical advantage count as they enjoy longer periods of possession without testing Ward. Cymru will need to stay defensively disciplined to take something from this game as one mistake could prove to be the difference.

      22. Yellow card

        CENGIZ ÜNDER

      23. Neco Williams plays the ball forward.

      24. A great effort from Wilson as his free-kick from distance is well saved by Günok. That will be a welcome confidence boost for the 10-men of Cymru at the start of the 2nd half.

      25. Yellow card

        MERIH DEMIRAL

      26. Substitution

        CABANGO Benjamin replaces JOHNSON Brennan

      27. Substitution

        UMUT NAYIR replaces KEREM AKTÜRKOĞLU

      28. One substitution for Cymru at half-time as Rob Page reacts to Morrell’s red card by replacing Johnson with Cabango. Johnson had suffered an early injury and required treatment during the opening half, but Morrell’s dismissal has also prompted a tactical change. Meanwhile, Nayir replaces Aktürkoğlu for Türkiye.

      29. Cymru will need the Red Wall behind them like never before in this 2nd half

      30. Half-time verdict: A tough test has just become a lot tougher following a red card for Morrell in the final exchanges of the opening half. Türkiye have enjoyed the better possession and only a lengthy VAR check prevented them from taking an early lead when an own goal from Mepham was eventually ruled out for offside. Chances have been few and far between and it remains goalless, much to the frustration of the home side who have had the better of the game and finished the half as the stronger side with their one-man advantage.

      31. Red card

        MORRELL Joseff

      32. A straight red card for Morrell for a high challenge on Kadıoğlu. The second for Cymru in as many games just as the side were enjoying their best period of possession.

      33. Türkiye thought they had taken an early lead but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR check.

      34. Türkiye enjoying the majority of possession but Cymru are defending well and frustrating their opponents. The home fans are in good voice but could soon lose patience if their side fail to take advantage of their time with the ball. A pause in play as Johnson receives treatment and a chance of Page to discuss what he’s seen so far with the rest of his side.

      35. Cymru line-up before kick-off in Samsun.

      36. Yellow card

        ZEKI ÇELIK

      37. A narrow escape for Cymru as an own goal from Mepham is disallowed for offside following a lengthy VAR check.

      38. Heavy rain in Samsun as both teams look to make an early mark on the game. Not quite the weather expected in this part of the world at this time of year.

      39. Cymru kick-off and the match is underway. This match marks the midway point in this qualifying campaign for Rob Page’s side.

      40. Joe Morrell returns to the Cymru starting line-up tonight for what will be a 36th senior international appearance for the 26-year old midfielder.

      41. It will be all white on the night.

      42. Cymru manager Rob Page will demand a much better performance from his side tonight and will know that a victory over Türkiye will take his side to the top of Group D. Likewise, the home side can take a major step towards EURO 2024 if they capitalise on the intense atmosphere at the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium and claim maximum points.

      43. The stage is set as Cymru prepare to take on Türkiye in front of 34,000 fans for what is now a significant match for both nations in EURO 2024 qualifying. Earlier today, Armenia level with Türkiye at the top of Group D with a 2-1 home win over Latvia through an injury-time penalty from Tigran Barseghyan, while top seeds Croatia were in UEFA Nations League action during this international window.

      44. Cymru captain Aaron Ramsey takes a look around the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium ahead of kick-off. Ramsey is set to make his 82nd senior international appearance for his country this evening.

      45. Türkiye manager Stefan Kuntz has also made two changes to his starting line-up following their 3-2 victory over Latvia on Friday as Barış Alper Yılmaz and Salih Özcan replace Umut Nayir and Arda Güler.

      46. Cymru manager Rob Page has made two changes to his starting line-up following the 4-2 defeat to Armenia on Friday as Neco Williams and Joe Morrell come into the team in place of Ben Davies and the suspended Kieffer Moore. Here is confirmation of the Cymru starting line-up for this EURO 2024 qualifier against Türkiye in Samsun.

      47. The Cymru squad went for a pre-match walk in Samsun earlier today ahead of what is now a significant EURO 2024 qualifier against Türkiye this evening. Team news from the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium will follow shortly and we will bring you live updates, opinion and analysis here throughout the match as manager Rob Page and his squad look to get their qualifying campaign back on track.

      48. Cymru manager Rob Page spoke to the media in Samsun on Sunday as his squad prepare to take on Group D leaders Türkiye following the surprise defeat against Armenia.

“Friday was a massive bump, but now we stick together as a group,” said Page. “We showed our potential in March. We are still a young group so there are going to be inconsistencies, there are going to be bumps. But we’re a team in progression, a team in transition, so we have to remind ourselves where on the journey we are.

“It’s a long-term plan. Since the World Cup there have been some senior players who have left, big characters in the changing room. We are going to have moments like we had the other night, it’s about how we manage those defeats. Get both sides of our game right and we will be a force to be reckoned with, and we will be able to compete with top nations.”

      49. The Cymru squad trained at the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium yesterday ahead of the EURO 2024 qualifier against Group D leaders Türkiye tonight. Despite the surprise defeat to Armenia on Friday, Rob Page’s side will move to the top of the table with a victory. Meanwhile, Armenia host Latvia in the other group game later today.

      50. Türkiye captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu will be one of the key players that Cymru will need to watch out for on Monday evening. The talented attacking midfielder made headlines in the summer of 2021 when he moved AC Milan to Inter Milan and has represented his country at every level from U16’s to the national team after making his senior debut in 2013. The 29-year old Çalhanoğlu has scored 17 goals in 77 appearances for his country during the last decade.

      51. Italian Fabio Maresca will take charge of the EURO 2024 qualifier between Türkiye and Cymru in Samsun on Monday. The 42-year old compliments his domestic games in Serie A by also officiating in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa Conference League together with international appointments following his promotion to the FIFA list in 2020.

In January this year, Maresca took charge of the Italian Super Cup between AC Milan and Inter in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He will be assisted on Monday by Daniele Bindoni and Alberto Tegoni while Luca Massimi is the fourth official. Massimiliano Irrati is the VAR and he will be assisted by Gianluca Aureliano. All of the officials are from Italy.

      52. Former Germany striker Stefan Kuntz is the current manager of Türkiye. The 60-year old took charge of the national team in September 2021 following the last EURO finals and this is his highest-profile appointment having previously coached the Germany U21 team between 2016 and 2021 after spells in the lower levels of the German game. He was an impressive record, winning 11 of his 17 international fixtures to date, but his side did suffer a 2-0 defeat to Croatia earlier in the campaign.

      53. The Cymru squad travelled to Türkiye on Saturday ahead of what is now a crucial EURO 2024 qualifier against the hosts in Samsun on Monday evening following the surprise 4-2 defeat to Armenia in Cardiff. A win would move Cymru to the top of Group D, but striker Kieffer Moore was shown a straight red card in the loss to Armenia and will now miss the match through suspension.

Türkiye are the current group leaders following their victory over Latvia on Friday night, but top seeds Croatia have only played two games due to their involvement in the UEFA Nations League Finals.

      54. There have been seven previous meetings between Cymru and Türkiye, with Cymru winning four of these fixtures compared to Turkey’s two victories in 1979 and 1997. Nick Deacy scored the only goal of the game when the two sides first met at the Racecourse in November 1978, while Türkiye won an incredible game 6-4 in Istanbul back in August 1997. Cymru manager Rob Page made his senior international debut against Türkiye when the two teams played out a 0-0 draw in 1996.

The last meeting between the two nations took place in Baku, Azerbaijan in June 2021 as Cymru claimed a crucial 2-0 victory in the group stages of the EURO finals through goals from Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts (below). A repeat result on Monday would prove just as valuable for Page and his squad as they look to get the qualification campaign back on track following the defeat to Armenia on Friday night.

      55. It proved to be a frustrating night for Cymru in Cardiff on Friday as Armenia produced a shock 4-2 victory despite Dan James putting Rob Page’s side ahead early on. The side now head to the city of Samsun to take on Türkiye on Monday evening, and their opponents go into the match as Group D leaders following their injury-time 3-2 victory over Latvia.

Cymru striker Kieffer Moore was shown a straight red card in the defeat to Armenia, but there was a welcome return to action for David Brooks, and he will be one of a number of players in contention for a place in the starting line-up on Monday as Page looks to make amends for what was one of the lowest points for the side in recent years.
