Carrie Jones’ First Cymru Goal Sets Up Date With History

One match. One point. That’s what it has all come down to as Cymru set themselves up for a date with destiny.

Gemma Grainger’s team need just one more point from their final qualifying match against Slovenia on Tuesday (6 September) to progress to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Play-Offs, which would be an historic achievement for Cymru.

Carrie Jones’ first ever goal was enough to see off the challenge of Greece in Volos, but in truth, Cymru never looked in danger as the home team put players behind the ball and rarely generated any kind of attack.

With these final qualifying matches being played prior to the start of the season, the way the fixtures have fallen will suit Cymru as the win in Greece has dusted away the cobwebs ahead of that crunch match against Slovenia at Cardiff City Stadium.

A record crowd for a Women’s international match will be in attendance and the the power of The Red Wall cannot be underestimated as Cymru look to make the Play-Offs for the very first time.

Tickets for the match Tuesday are available at faw.cymru/tickets.
