Cymru captain Sophie Ingle today received her OBE for services to football at Windsor Castle.
Ingle won her first cap on the international stage against Azerbaijan in a FIFA World Cup qualifier played in Baku in October 2009 and was given the Cymru captaincy in February 2015 while only 23 years old.
Ingle became a Cymru centurion in September 2020 in a EURO qualifier against Norway, and most recently played every minute of the qualifying round and European play-offs for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where Cymru narrowly missed out on reaching a major tournament for the first time.
At club level, Ingle started her career playing for Vale Wanderers, Dinas Powys and Cardiff City Ladies, winning the FAW Women’s Cup twice before moving across the border. Over in England, Ingle has played for Bristol Academy, Liverpool and Chelsea, winning the Women’s Super League, League Cup and Community Shield with the latter.
During her time with Chelsea, who she signed a contract extension with in December, Ingle has also been a UEFA Women’s Champions League runner-up and was nominated for the FIFA Puskas Goal of the Year in 2020.
